Why in the world do photographers charge so much?????

OK - So I just had to do this post, why do photographers charge so much and why such variables in prices?????
Just like vehicles that have parts go bad, cameras, lenses and computers do too. Shocker I know. LOL.
In 2011 I had my 24-70 L series focus component go out, my IMAC 24 sensor and hard drive failed (after only 1 year!!), my 580 flash broke and
last but not least one of my 5D's shutters went bad. This of course does not include new camera batteries that stay fresh only 1 year
or regular maintenance issues. In 2011 I spent nearly $3000 buckeroos to stay up on my gear not including new gear, props,photography classes, and updated editing programs.

In this digital age where everyone has digital cameras and upload their photos to a local one hour store, we hear this all the time – How in the world do Professional Photographers charge so much for an 8×10 when they cost just $1.50 at costco?
Dont get me wrong - I love costco for my personal 4x6 archived albums of silly little things, but my wall prints are special and you know they are printed in metallic papers or canvas.

Here’s why.

Simply put, you’re not just paying for the actual image from a professionaly lab in amazing papers, you’re paying for time, talent and expertise in creating the image itself.

A $300 session that lasts 1 hour is just the start for me. I drive home, upload the images, back them up, sort them, edit final images, laser disc, burn disc 2 copies for archiving, e-mail client, mail disc, and finally order professional prints. This can take up to 20 hours.
For a 6-8 hour wedding:
- I won’t bore you with the details, but a 6-8 hour wedding typically amounts to at least 40 hours of time in post processing and editing time, upload time, back up time, album design time, revision on the album design time, etc., etc.

I realize you dont have to have all the nicest gear to take and make a great picture. There are some things I personally just wont ever want to be without. For example back up cameras. : - ) I own 4 SLR's because I like to be prepared for anything especially when I shoot weddings. I know not everyone wants to have 4 cameras but it works for me even though it took 2 years of hard work to make any kind of profit. Photographers prices range so vastly for many many reasons. How long they have had their business, editing time, websites, purchasing equipment that can easily cost up to $10,000 simply to start; for some photographers it’s as much as $30,000, continue to invest in gear if any, their experience, schooling/continued education, talent, and of course many other personal reasons.

I love what I do and I do what I love! If I did not love this I would have given up years ago. : - )

I thought I had it all planned out. I was going to have my baby and feel wonderful to take his newborn pictures.
That was a big joke. I am always thinking things will be a breeze. Well I got home with my sweet little baby and just felt like
sleeping and sleeping some more. The last thing on my mind was taking pictures. I made a few attempts and he was a stinker for me so I put it off past the 10 day mark which all the newborn photographers know is a no-no. : - )
I noticed one day he was especially sleepy so I rushed him in the studio for a few minutes and got these ones. I have learned
my lesson that I will be hiring someone with my next baby so I can sit back and let someone else do the shoot. : - ) Here is my little Cruz 8lbs 3 oz.

So a few months back one of my babies ( Canon 5D ) broke. Sad day for me. : - ) The wear on my cameras is tough therefore
I decided after much thought that to continue photography I had to make changes.

Here is a quick reference to my pricing for this year.

Mini sessions will no longer be available on location but only in my studio with back to back appointments scheduled.

Regular session is $300 due at session with approximately 30-35 images. Keep in mind editing can take 2 weeks per session.

With that said I am so excited to announce that my studio will be completed in 2 months. Many fun things await

like custom made beds and brick walls. I have gone overboard!

I am booking fall sessions now as we are expecting a baby boy this October! There are only a limited amount of sessions left.

I am not to personal on this blog. I have decided to slowly share more as I feel comfortable to do so.
For the past 14 years or so I have off and on struggled with Crohn's Disease usually dealing with it a couple weeks out of the year sometimes needing to take a vacation to the hospital. Dont worry, it is not contagious and I still want hugs. :- ) Up until last week I was in denial that the past few years I was not sick, or that I even had the disease even though I was admitted last May to Banner.
I had a whole year of remission which is a miracle for this years events and I am so thankful for that. Although I am going through being ill now I know God is taking care of me and He has a plan for me. I know He will continue to heal me and that I am not alone. Today is a good day! I got out of bed to write! LoVes!

Sadie wants a puppy for Christmas. I need everyone out there to talk Summer my sister into getting her one.

session but when he said he ropes and has a horse I turned the car around and we got some great shots with his horse.
His horse acts like a well behaved dog. I realized tonight my mama's horse could use some training. : - )

School is starting and I am actually sad about it. I will have more time for work which is nice but less time with my sweet little girl. My sister has two little ones and we decided to do Glamour shots on the girls for fun. Our grandma took
us to have them done when we were little and they are so funny. All the make up and hair plastered on our innocent faces.

I love the Speakmans! I photographed this little man when he was just a newborn. His baby picture is up at Banner Desert Hospital in Labor and Delivery and you can see why. He is so handsome!

One of my favorite things to do in life besides photography, hehehehhe, is getting outside the city. We recently went on a road trip and it was so much fun. My husband tolerates my random excitement to pull over anytime I see something that I need a photo of. It takes us 3 hours to get 60 miles and we sight see. Some of the best parts of this trip were being with the ones I love, breathing fresh air and having no schedule. I love this earth.

My little sister Sabrina is getting married! I just cant believe it because she is only 18! I guess I was not that much older when I got married but she is the baby of the family and it has gone by all too fast. She has grown into a beautiful woman and she is marrying a wonderful guy- Talor. I am so happy for you both! I would love to stay up all night and edit these but I am working early tomorrow so I am gonna go snuggle in bed. I love you two!

3 things from last weekend that I think are perty..........

They are all so cute....... Thank you Roberts!

I am lucky enough to have photographed the beautiful Roberts family. Papa, Randy was so cute rolling in the grass with all 7 grandkids which is something my dad always does. I left feeling like I dont want to stop photographing larger groups. They were awesome!
There is something about children that makes my heart sing. : - ) These little girls remind me if little cherubs and I could not resist blogging them tonight. I promise there will be more in the next couple days.

I couldnt wait to put these up. I just got home from photographing Bethany and Kyle's wedding. The ceremony was beautiful and private only seating about 20 guests followed by a reception at the Estate house in Scottsdale. I honestly can say I have the best job in the whole world and am so blessed to be able to spend time with such awesome clients and now friends!

I am so excited to start concentrating more on Pet Portraiture!
